Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of wagering options and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi/low.
