Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players can get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
