Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, and a few trying for the low hand.
