Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi-low starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play with ease.
