Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi-low begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an exciting range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha hi lo.
