Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex initially, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of betting options and because you have several individuals shooting for the high, and several shooting for the low.
