Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and several trying for the low.
