Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems complicated initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, and many shooting for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
