Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

While it seems complex at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low. If you like a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
