Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting collection of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high, along with many battling for the low.
