Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game with ease.
