Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an overwhelming assortment of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high, along with many battling for the low.
