Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, following a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha High-Low offers an amazing assortment of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, as well as a few battling for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
