Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing range of wagering choices and because you have several individuals battling for the high, along with a few battling for the low.
