Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming collection of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, as well as several trying for the low hand.
