Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complex at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
