Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game with ease.
