Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha Hi-Lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at the start, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi/low offers an exciting array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high, and many battling for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
