Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi low starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
