Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems difficult at the outset, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of betting options and seeing that you have many players trying for the high, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
