Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complex at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an overwhelming range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, and a few shooting for the low.
