Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi-low starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi/lo offers an overwhelming assortment of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
